RANDY'S IDEA OF A STEP LADDAR FOR RAING: THE REASON WE NEED SPORT MODS
For a long time it has been clear that the jump for a driver to make it from street stocks to the next level of racing
was getting hard to make. Moving up to Spuper stock or modifieds would be a hard mover for most, even if they had proved
themselves as a top strreet stock driver. For one thing it would cost a lot more to move up and the competition level
in the upper classses is already saturated with fast cars. A track needs a step laddar that makes it easy to move up.
By that I mean you need a place to sell your old car and the next class needs to not be full of good cars or too big a step
to make a successful move. I have seen a lot of drivers move up to modifieds and then quit shortly after finding out
how much it really cost to run competatively. Sport mods will provide a perfect step on the laddar to move up slower
and make it more likely to keep the drivers racing in the future. A track must also have a good cheap entry level class.
For every 10 that you get into an entry level of racing only about 2 or 3 stay around for over 3 years. Thunder bombers
only get 1 out of 10 to move into stock cars and become a real racer. Thunder bombers are really not an entry level
class but it is a fun class and gets a lot of drivers that don't want to drive a real race car, most just want to bang around
for the fun of it.
Sport mods have an appearance of inexpensive racing, but it's not really cheap just cheaper than modifieds. It
is cheaper to start out and cheaper every time you put it on the track. The costs involved with sport mods are under
control and inline with what an average guy can afford to go have fun in racing. DON'T EVER FORGET IT HAS TO BE FUN
THAT IS WHY EVERYONE RACES. If the rules are policed properly the class can be around for a long time. The rules
have to be policed and if someone gets to winning a lot they must be checked hard NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE and if found cheating
they should be kicked out of the class permanently not just DQ'ed for the night and take a few points away. KICK THEM
OUT FOR GOOD. That's how I see the class surviving. Anything less and the class will die.
